Respected Minister, I read with interest the text of your speech of the 21st of October at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. My impressions were mixed. However, I mainly felt that you wished to present what was desirable, instead of what was real.

As Armenians, we’re in trying times. But we’ve faced hardship before. Far worse, of course, and we’ve always come through. At times like this, it’s sometimes worth asking why. Why is it that we’ve survived? What exactly is it about us, or in us, that propels us forward against great hardship and some very tough odds.

Thousands gathered at Yerevan’s Charles Aznavour Square Friday afternoon to continue their protest against the Turkey-Armenia protocols signed last Saturday. The document, scheduled for ratification by the Armenian Parliament in the coming weeks, will establish normal relations between Armenia and Turkey at the cost of Armenia signing an agreement that calls into question the Armenian Genocide, undermines the security of Armenia, and threatens the right to self-determination for the people of Karabagh.

The protocols were signed because we lacked the strategic points of intervention to cause the change we wanted. I would like to offer some thoughts of reflection, as well as some thoughts on moving forward.
